Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. And overnight, the clocks go back.
At 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, daylight saving time ends in Houston and other places that observe it. The clock returns to 1 a.m., and the hour from 1 to 2 a.m. happens twice.
You can spend it staying up. You can spend it sleeping.
Either way, give Saturday evening a little room.
Start with a dinner that does not rush the night.
Something good, ready to eat, with enough time to sit down. If the night is going to run long, it can begin slowly.
Then set the candy bowl by the door and let the evening begin.
If you are going out, enjoy the walk and the costumes. If you are staying home, enjoy the parade arriving on your porch.
And when the last visitors leave, you do not have to rush straight into clearing everything away.
Sit for a while. Talk about the best costume. Put on a film. Have something sweet without standing over the kitchen counter.
The extra hour does not need another task in it.
It can be the reason you let the night finish slowly.
Of course, you do not have to stay awake until two to benefit from the clock change. Turn back any clocks that need adjusting before bed, and let sleep have the hour instead.
A long night is an option, not an obligation.
We cook from scratch so dinner can be the easy part of a busy night. Pick something up on the way and let the evening start without a sink full of dishes.
Halloween has plenty to ask of the evening.
Cooking does not have to be one of them.
Order online and take 10% off your first order. Eat before the doorbell starts. Let the rest of the night take its time.
